About me
My name is Joe ('Wáats'asdiyei) Yates, and I am a part of the Yawk'laanaas tribe. I come from the Brown Bear House and belong to the Raven moiety. My grandmother is Kaats Dang (Two deer), and My mother's name is Guulaakiihla (Abalone Dish). My name is 'Wáats'asdiyei (Joe Yates). My Grandfather's name is Ralph. My father's name is John, and My wife's name is Aciviran. My daughter's name is Nayak'aq Yaahl. My son's name is Skil Arri'aq.
I attended the University of Alaska Southeast pursuing my degree in Anthropology, emphasizing Haida History and Culture. During my senior year, I participated in an Ethnographic Filmmaking class, film on culture. After completing my higher education, I went back home to Craig, Alaska. I worked there for four years as a Boys & Girls Club Manager. During that time, I realized how much I missed making films. When my wife and I decided to go back to college, this time around, I pursued my degree in film with a minor in Photography at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
Currently, I am a Field Producer and Editor for the National Geographic show: Life Below Zero: First Alaskans. I am also a writer for the PBS KIDS show: Molly of Denali. I decided to start my own film business by combing my passion for my culture and filmmaking. Our mission is to portray our people, Alaskan Natives, with representation in front and behind the cameras. We ensure that these stories are told accurately and highlight our traditional values.
